Gentle Cavity Treatment for Kids: Exploring SMART & ART Techniques

At KC Braces and Kids, we understand that dental visits can be stressful for children, especially those who are young, pre-cooperative, or have special needs. That’s why we offer Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) and Silver Modified Atraumatic Restorative Technique (SMART) restorations minimally invasive options that make treating cavities easier, gentler, and more comfortable for your child.

What is Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART)?

ART is a gentle, drill-free approach to treating cavities using special hand instruments to carefully remove decayed portions of the tooth. Since no numbing or anesthesia is typically required, this procedure is painless and stress-free for your child.

Once the cavity is cleaned, the tooth is restored using either:
1. A stainless steel crown (modified Hall technique) for long-term protection.
2. A resin-modified glass ionomer (tooth-colored filling) that bonds naturally to the tooth.

What is a SMART Restoration?

A Silver Modified Atraumatic Restorative Technique (SMART) restoration is another minimally invasive method used to slow down or stop cavity progression perfect for children who may not yet tolerate traditional dental procedures.

How does it work?

1. Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is applied to the cavity to strengthen and remineralize the affected tooth structure.
2. A tooth-colored filling or full-coverage crown is placed to restore function and protect the tooth.

This treatment is best paired with good oral hygiene and dietary changes to ensure long-term success.

What Happens During Treatment?

1. We gently clean the affected tooth using rotary instruments or hand tools.
2. We remove the decayed portion without drills or shots.
3. We place a protective filling that bonds securely to the tooth.
4. The material hardens quickly, so your child can eat and drink right away after the procedure.

How Long Do SMART Restorations Last?

SMART restorations are a temporary solution that can last for several years with proper care. As your child grows and becomes more comfortable with dental visits, we may recommend more permanent treatments such as composite (tooth-colored) fillings.

Is a SMART Restoration Right for Your Child?

If you’d like to learn more about ART or SMART restorations for your child, contact KC Braces + Kids today! Our team is happy to answer your questions and discuss the best treatment options for your child’s unique needs.

What are the benefits of expanders in young patients?

Rapid palatal expansion (RPE) is an effective orthodontic treatment for children aged 7-11, leveraging the unfused midpalatal suture to widen the maxilla, correct crossbites, create dental space, and prevent long-term occlusal and growth issues. Beyond dental benefits, RPE enhances nasal breathing, reduces obstructive sleep apnea symptoms, and may improve hearing, nocturnal enuresis, and vertical growth patterns, offering a high success rate with minimal invasiveness in this age group.
